Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno

The Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Brno (ARÚB) is a modern research institution with a long-standing tradition. It primarily focuses on basic research into three key periods of human history, alongside traditional topics of Moravian archaeology. It includes the period of mammoth hunters in the Palaeolithic, the Roman army presence in Moravia during the first centuries AD and the subsequent Migration period, and finally the early and high medieval history of Moravia and Czech Silesia, within the broader context of Central and Eastern European history – particularly the phenomenon of Great Moravia. The Institute conducts both systematic and rescue excavations, provides expert services in the field of archaeological monument care, preserves and documents archaeological records, issues both academic and popularisation publications, and presents archaeological heritage to the wider public.

Moravian Museum

The Moravian Museum (MZM) was founded on 29 July 1817, making it the second oldest and second largest memory institution in the Czech Republic. As of 1 May 2014, it is divided into the Natural Science, Art, and History Museums, comprising 18 specialised departments, institutes and research centres. Among these is the Centre for Slavonic Archaeology of the History Museum of MZM (CSA), based in Uherské Hradiště. Established as an independent unit within the museum on 1 April 2015, its origins go back much further – to the post-war period and the work of Vilém Hrubý, whose excavations in the northern part of the Middle Course of the Morava River, particularly in Staré Město, laid the foundation for the centre’s activities. Today, CSA staff not only engage in traditional museum work but also carry out rescue archaeological excavations, provide expert services in the field of archaeological monument care, contribute to academic and popularisation publications, and collaborate with various media. They are co-authors and scientific guarantors of the highly successful Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Modrá near Velehrad, known as the Fortified Great Moravian Settlement in the Middle Course of the Morava River.
