12. 09. 2024 We are producing scientific replicas of spherical buttons (gombíky)

During the summer, scientific replicas of Great Moravian spherical buttons were produced at the research base Mikulčice-Trapíkov. The material composition and manufacturing procedures identified during microscopic examinations of the originals were faithfully followed. The replica of the golden gombík 1616/57 from grave 580 in the Mikulčice basilica was challenging due to the body being beaten from a single sheet of gold and the use of high-purity gold, which is difficult to melt. For the pair of silver spherical buttons from grave 100 near the church 2 in Mikulčice, the biggest challenge was correctly laying out and connecting the decorative patterns on both hemispheres. A report on the manufacturing process is in preparation.
